Om Namah shambhave! Om Namah Shivaya! My love and blessings to every one of you. This period that we chanted Om Namah shivay and we prayed , everyone took it forward with full faith devotion and love. Henceforth , I will come online twice a week . On Thursdays , I will continue the chants of Om Namah shivay done so far for half an hour – from 7.30pm to 8 pm and on every Sunday there will be a satsang. The remaining days of the week , devotees from various countries who wish to chant O Namah shivaya will chant for one hour.
This beautiful model of prayers that we have started and derived joy from , we need to keep it going ; not stop it. Do not think that if Babaji is not chanting , we don’t have to. Prayer is your religion ; with the same love and faith that you prayed thus far , you need to continue hence forward.
Prayer is such a strength and force that purifies not only our beings , but the environment around us.
Prayer has that power – that with which anything you wish to get done can be achieved. In life , we may face stumbling blocks on something that has to be done; prayers have the ability to change what is impossible to possible.
Take air. It pervades the entire cosmos and is spread all over nature. We can feel it all the time and experience it. However , if a tyre gets deflated , or punctured , just because air pervades everywhere , we cannot leave it in open air and expect it to get filled. We need to take it to an appropriate shop for filling air. Similarly , the lord pervades and is both within and outside us ; he is aware of what your prayer is about , even before you pray; he is aware of the words you will use even before you utter them ; then , is there a necessity of praying online or registering your presence ? The way you need to take a tyre to a specific shop , in the same manner , for our prayers to reach out to everyone we need to sit , calm and collected in mind , at a fixed time [ presently 7pm]. No doubt each breath you inhale all day should be suffused with prayer ; however it is important to have a rule and a time for prayer . I keep telling you all the time that I am here to free you from every rule ; you don’t need any rules ; I won’t make any rules and yet it is very important to be regulated and to have discipline on every count. This is necessary because , what the guru says , what he tells you to do , what he teaches you , the underlying benefit is not for the guru , it is for you and for all those who are connected with you , however many your relatives , and friends , or be it your parents or siblings . Done with discipline , be it rising in the morning or partaking lunch or prayer or meditation, it gains such power and strength. The times that are to follow are such that there would be nothing in man’s hand , save prayer. You need to pray every day ! It is not merely when I come online that I am with you ; I am watching you all the time from within you.
So you will continue with this prayer and increase the joy and happiness that is obtained by prayer; it is a beautiful opportunity for you to partake in this prayer , be eagerly anticipating your turn , think out how you can do it beautifully and we need to remain prompt and forthcoming to do this prayer.
Many years ago , when I was a child , I did not know how to play the harmonium. There was a harmonium lying at home ; I used to choose a note and in that match my voice and sing many different tunes of Om Namah shivaya. Each day I did this; in one hand I had a hand drum [dholak] and with the other I played the harmonium. So singing Om Namah Shivay in different tunes, then sing Hanuman Chalisa in different tunes followed by Sankeertans of Durga Maa, instead of chanting , I used to sing them in tunes.
One day it so happened that I got up early morning , at 4 am went to the temple , was bathing the idols of the gods, felt presence of no one else around as all were sleeping ; and suddenly I felt some hand on my back and wondered who could have come so early in the morning; on turning around I saw – so early in the morning , at 4 am , on a Tuesday – a large sized monkey ; he was sitting just behind me ; to see a monkey there at 4 am was such a rare sight ; he was a burly strong monkey and I thought that he might bite me , but just as I looked at him , he looked at me and with so much love that I concluded that this is no ordinary monkey , this is lord Hanuman Himself!! So it wasn’t because I sang , it came and sat here; it did nothing to me , I too did not follow it ; it came and went ; what is implied here is that – what else would have happened? You need to give words to your prayer. I believe that the One Creator who has created the entire cosmos and who knows everything – to Him , we pray – for a job, for money , for fixing marriage , for a house etc.. !! The real nature of prayer is silence ; why silent ? When we regard ourselves with a religion , with a mantra – e.g., Om Namah Shivay or with prayers of Christianity or the Koran , we identify ourselves with that particular religion. As we continue to pray , a stage arrives when prayers are not verbalized. Prayers become silent ! No words in prayer; nothing to be done in prayer; you yourself become nothing. Noiseless. In that state where there are no words and all is silence you recognize that you do not belong to any caste or creed or religion; You meet the truth which is inside you ; you get to recognize your creator within you and you see that you are none other than yourself. You are You. You came alone into this world and this your journey whether within or anywhere else or wherever you wish to go , it is your journey and you do it alone.
What is prayer ? It is - when you meet your true self. It is like this. You watch a river . You watch it at its’ point of origin where it is slow , then as it flows , it gains momentum and finally , as it reaches the sea it merges after slowing down. Similarly take a storm. When it starts the wind blows slowly , you feel a quiet breeze ; further you feel the strength and the sound of the breeze ; then it goes into a full blown storm and finally it ebbs down and leaves in calm. Nature shows you many things if only you are willing to observe and learn . Look at the rain ; it starts with a few drops , then drizzles ,then goes into a heavy shower and finally peters off slowly. Take fire – it starts with a spark , then grows into a flame , then a blaze , later an inferno till it finally dies down. Similarly for a human journey in life , one is first a newborn , goes through infancy and toddler years , to move into youth , a full blown adult , then go through middle age , reach old age and finally fall away. So this pattern or velocity , be it for prayers or when you join a new guru , or you learn something or join a sect , or any work , need not be only in the spiritual realm, be it any kind of activity , initially you will be fired with a lot of enthusiasm and with time you will work on it with interest and passion; however , over time you will begin to get bored of it ; begin to feel it a worthless pursuit and there will dawn a day when you will want to quit what you were doing . Just reflect on this – what you yearned for and wanted , after doing it for some time you wish to drop that very work and get rid of it.
In the same manner – when you meet a new guru, hear some of his new messages , new ideas not heard by you before , something new that attracts you , fragrance of some new flowers , you keep following that fragrance ; something new ; everyone wants something new all the time , something changed and different ; with these , there will also come a time when you will feel all this futile and meaningless; it is easy to accept a guru or follow him giving him due respect and honor ; however , there may come a time when you don’t feel connected with his teachings and feel the need to leave him ; do so then , with the same amount of honor and respect that you had for him when you accepted him. If you don’t , it implies that you had no respect for him even when you took him as your guru in the first place. The difficulty lies in that , till now , it has always been easy to accept a guru with honor and respect but it is difficult to leave him with the same honor and respect. So the idea of saying this , is that when the fragrance of new messages , new paths , new gurus attract you , be careful because in your life journey you will be subjected to fresh tests again and again.
Some change gurus and keeps changing and changing gurus. In this world – the Creator – Narayan made individuals – Nar ; and individuals kept creating their own Gods or Narayans – countless in number ; these created gods through a false identity of Godhood and men through these gods created a parallel society in which there was no consideration for other living entities ; they performed worship of these false gods resulting in subversion of spirituality as well as all other facets in life and while man thinks that he is going towards spirituality , he is not able to forsake the deep rooted ego within. When the ego cannot be dropped , when the attitude that the world is but one family has not got embedded within , you have to infer that it is a reflection of the shortcoming of the guru guiding you . Man keeps changing gurus repeatedly because he wants to be shown that kind of a miracle which he wishes to see. No one wants a guru who is trying to take you to understand your own inner reality. If a miracle cannot be performed , the guru is not worth following as learnings and promises are nonsensical and without value according to the prevailing perceptions; in this world how many countless individuals take birth only for leading a nonsensical rotten life by which is meant that however much good one does , they see it with a blinkered vision , they have the habit of labeling truth as false or fake . So there is no need to panic or fear in life. If you are in the path of spirituality and your life turns more difficult you don’t have to fear ; because in life there are two aspects or dimensions – one of comfort and happiness and the other of sorrow. If you go with both happiness and sorrow , and spiritual path is the path of ultimate happiness , what is the difference between this world and the world beyond ? What you see with your eyes open –in the here and now , is of this world ; what you can decipher with your eyes closed is of the afterworld – be it paradise or hell. So heaven and hell are both nowhere but within the frame of this world itself. If you put your entire efforts to look within you - into your inner self , you will be in heaven .If you get involved in matters concerning the lives of others such as what he has done , where did they go , what food they consumed , why did he do that , this is very wrong and that is very bad , this is very good etc etc .. if you drop all this that contaminates the mind, nor keep discussing matters between different issues and different people ; if you put all your energies into looking within , you will see heaven within you. Atheists , those who criticize others all the time , they have a lot of power and strength within them and they use all that energy simply in talking and applying their mind in issues around . How beautiful will be our life if we focus our vision on our inner self , leaving aside futile talks and futile pursuits. Better it would be if we don’t waste our energies and time and put our whole consciousness undividedly in seeking our own inner world. The guru’s teachings can lead you to see your inner world ; however for that you will need to bring his teachings into your life.
Here is a very beautiful tiny example to illustrate this related to the ego on one side and love on the other . When you stand below a large tree , it gives you shade and similarly , it gives as many standing below it , the same shade – because it is not aware about its’ largeness.
The ego is super happy when it gains something or it snatches something from someone. Love is very happy when it loses everything , or gift away to someone . The tree gives equal shade to everyone alike as it does not differentiate one from the other while a person on learning or getting a little knowledge , assumes or feigns a superiority , or says that he is higher in comparison to the other , such an attitude is of the ego ; the feeling – “I am this , I am that or I can do this or that or the other” – all this is nothing but the ego raising its’ head. The ego can never give shade. It contracts any shade or comfort . It is on an effort to establish its’ identity – Its’ presence as ‘I’; it wants to demonstrate – look , I am something ; somebody. However , don’t get carried away or fooled by its’ machinations. One thing in the world that can never be established is - ‘I’. You can be a good leader , or a big minister in governing the country – but only as long as the breath flows in and out of you. When you are gone , your name , fame , your work , your religion , caste all dissolve instantly. So you will never be able to substantiate the ‘I’ ; don’t try as much. I will give you a beautiful example . We say that everything is God and that god is in everyone. You may feel that you have read and understood the scriptures or are following your religion assiduously , or that you have understood what God is about or have realized yourself or have acquired knowledge ; however , be careful that you don’t consider those working for you or under you as inferior or below you . The day you consider the individual working for you as inferior and as your servant , know that , you have made God your servant as in that person too resides God. The table at which you get your food has God ; that which you consume has God in it ; that which you throw out as waste also has God in it. God is all pervasive . What is the definition that can be given to God , and how can we define Him? If anyone asks you to define God , you can answer that God is that one and only thing that cannot ever be defined because that which can be defined will be such that it can be located to a place and when God is omnipresent and all pervasive there is no way He can be described in such terms ; whatever you see , whomever you see , whatever you hear , whomever you are listening to – you are listening to God ; there is only God you are looking at ; when you have good thoughts or when you have bad thoughts all has God as its’ substratum. What you are doing ; what you have seen till today and what you are to see in the future ; what you have done till now and what you are going to do ; what you have eaten till today and what you will be consuming later – when all this is God , however can we establish Him in this world , beyond which there is nothing else in this world ! You have to live God not get Him. You have to open yourselves. Don’t tuck Him away. What you are and however you are , accept yourself. Be happy and try to remain happy within yourself. There is no need to somersault so much in spirituality – from here to there . There is no need to listen to everything. Listen to that tune which pleases you and you love to listen. You won’t be able to listen to a thousand tunes together. You will not be able to walk a thousand paths together; you cannot witness the different shades of nature be it summer or winter or spring –all together; man’s eyes are very tiny and can see very little. Look –right now all of you are watching me alone on a handset and we feel that we have advanced so much ; I am a doctor / engineer ; you are this or that ; or I have gained big degrees and learnt so much.
As you watch me on your handset , you can see only what is in front. To see the camera you need to turn the handset around . To see the backside of the TV you need to turn the TV around; in life’s journey you can see only one part at a time. It doesn’t mean that the other facet is non existent. If there is happiness , there is also sorrow ; and if there is sorrow , happiness follows in its’ wake. If there is sin , there is also merit and if there is virtue there is also vice. If God exists , you exist because God exists ; if God were not , you would not have been born ; and if you are non existent , the lord too does not exist ; and those who don’t believe that God exists , transform yourself and see if God exists or doesn’t.
Who succeeds in finding the lord ? The one who dissolves his own self into nothing ; one who breaks down his own identity . It is only after one drops one’s own individuality that one can succeed in reaching the lord. As long as the ‘I’ , the ego in you is present and you look at the lord with the attitude that you are somebody – “I know something , I am this, I am that , I have done so much of work, I have done so much of seva” - as long as you are in your own individual identity , you will not be able to hear the voice from within – because on the road of the ego , the Lord has no place ! There is no convergence of the two. What I am implying by all this that I have said , and I keep saying it to everyone , that in the path to meet your true self , you will need to drop your false identity –for a moment , or for a day because you will need to forget yourself and make yourself a zero as until then you will not be able to hear your inner voice. Presently , we are talking on phone to hear our inner voice , or resorting to online chats ; all this is happening on phone ; we are using the facilities available in the world and it is good that we are able to meet and communicate ; however , to know the truth , you need to come in the proximity of a guru and stay with the guru , observe and learn what the guru wishes to teach you at every step. In life’s journey , whatever time has passed by , whatever opportunities have gone by ,do not come again.
Babaji is with you to teach you spirituality with simplicity and ease ! Babaji is with everyone of you ! Many many blessings to everyone of you. Om Namah Shivaya.
