*“Kailash”*
So far, you have read fifteen mysteries related to Mount Kailash! And now I will tell you about the Mansarovar Lake. Before reaching Mount Kailash, there are these two lakes—vast and spread out like an ocean. One lake is calm, which is Mansarovar Lake, and the other appears fierce just by looking at it—that is Rakshas Tal. Now I will explain both of them in detail.
### *Mansarovar Lake*
Mansarovar Lake is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. To the west of Mansarovar Lake lies Rakshas Tal, and to the north stands Mount Kailash. The word "Mansarovar" is formed from two Sanskrit words: manas (meaning mind) and sarovar (meaning lake). According to Hindu scriptures, the creator god Brahma first meditated at Mansarovar Lake through his mind, and later the creation manifested on Earth.
According to Buddhist literature, Mansarovar Lake is the place where Lord Buddha’s mother, Queen Maya, bathed before giving birth to the Buddha. In Tibet, Mansarovar Lake is called Mapam Yumtso, which means “The Unconquerable Lake.”
Mansarovar Lake is filled with extraordinary beauty—from its crystal-clear blue waters near the shore to deep emerald-green hues towards the center. Mansarovar is considered even more sacred than sapphire! It is from Mansarovar Lake that pilgrims get their first sacred glimpse of Mount Kailash.
It is believed that Lord Shiva and Indra once swam in this lake in the form of swans. Mansarovar Lake is considered the summer home of swans—symbols of wisdom and beauty. Bathing in the waters of Mansarovar is said to remove greed, restless thoughts, and past sins. Circumambulating this lake grants immense spiritual benefits, helping one become free of sins. Therefore, all pilgrims on the Kailash Yatra consider the sight of Mansarovar Lake their greatest blessing.
Before reaching Mount Kailash, the circumambulation (parikrama) of this lake is performed. This parikrama is done by vehicle because the lake is so vast that walking around it is very difficult.
During the Mansarovar parikrama, pilgrims also witness the divine view of Mount Kailash. Circumambulating right in front of Lord Shiva is considered a blessing! Since ancient times, bathing in Mansarovar Lake has been considered auspicious. Even sages and seers would take a dip in the lake before ascending toward Mount Kailash. Hence, devotees have always wished to bathe at least once in Mansarovar Lake in their lifetime.
