| Char Dham Yatra – towards Badrinath, Day 44 |

History of Chandrashila

Lord Shiva has an inexhaustible reservoir of Shakti or energy because of which, He has been worshipped down the ages, era after era. Even as Lord Shiva who is beyond both life and death is worshipped in the world as the destroyer; at the same time, He is also regarded as the giver of life. Let me narrate to you the story of how Lord Shiva saved the Moon’s life and has the Moon seated in His matted locks.

When the great churning of the ocean was being done, there emerged from it the fatal and deadly Halahal poison too, which Lord Shiva gulped into His throat, to protect the entire creation from the destructive venom. However, Lord Shiva’s body temperature rose drastically due to this. Seeing this, the Moon prayed to Lord Shiva to be allowed to perch himself on the Lord’s head, to provide the much needed coolness to the Lord’s body. Besidew, that would also help reduce the impact of the poison. At first, Lord Shiva did not agree to it because the Moon, being white and cool would not have been able to withstand the intensity of the poison. However, after the other Gods too prayed thus, Lord Shiva agreed to it and He seated the Moon on His head in His. Since then, the Moon has remained seated on Lord Shiva’s head to disperse his coolness to the entire creation.

The Moon’s marriage was performed with the constellation of the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati, who go to form the 27 sectors of the ecliptic. Of the 27 of them, Rohini was the closest to the Moon. Seeing this, the other 26 daughters complained to their father expressing their pain and hurt. King Daksha known for his extremely short tempered nature cursed the Moon after which, being afflicted by tuberculosis, the Moon’s aspects and attributes began to decline. Sage Narada, at that point of time advised the Moon to pray to Lord Shiva for relief from his affliction. Upon his prayers, Lord Shiva blessed the Moon during Pradosh Kaal (the period that begins at the time of sunset and lasts for 96 minutes), granting him a new lease of Life. With this boon, the Moon survived despite being in the jaws of death and slowly began to regain his health. He then appeared as the full Moon on the Poornima day of the month and in this manner, the Moon was freed of all his difficulties & afflictions, by the Grace of Lord Shiva.

Chandrashila is the place where Lord Shiva permitted the moon to be seated on His head. Lord Rama too is said to have done penance at this place. Thus, each & every stone or rock in the Himalayas has a story to tell, a history of its own. The heart and the mind become peaceful here, as though life itself has come to a standstill & wants to lose itself completely in the moment.
