Char Dham Yatra – Pilgrimage to the Himalayas

Day 21 – Towards Kedarnath

Having had the Darshan of Chandravadani Maa, we have arrived at the Budha Kedar temple, the following day. Our hearts have been filled with joy and bliss, with Darshan of these divine and heavenly temples. After the Darshan of Yamunotri & Gangotri, this journey towards Kedar is becoming even more beautiful. The huge & tall mountains all around, the flowing rivers and Darshan of the temples built amidst them; our lives have been blessed and fulfilled. The heart desires that these moments should never come to an end, that this journey of our life along with all the others must not come to a standstill anywhere. Filled with bliss and joy amidst these thoughts, we reached the Budha Kedar temple.

Budha Kedar Temple

Along the route to Kedar from the temple of Maa Chandravadani, is the Budha Kedar temple on the Dhansali road, about 3 hours further ahead of Chandravadani temple. It falls in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, at the confluence of the rivers – Bal Ganga Dharam Ganga. This temple too is a very ancient, sacred and religious one. By road, it is located at a distance of 59 kms from new Tihari. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The doors leading into this temple are a fabulous combination of carved wood and engraved stone. Till date nobody has been able to guage the depth of the Shiv Ling installed in this old Kedar temple but, its height is about 2 – 3 feet from the ground level. Apart from that of Lord Shiva, there are many other shapes & figures too on the Shiv Ling, such as those of Mother Parvati, Lord Ganesha with His carriage – the mouse, the 5 Pandavas, Draupadi and Hanuman. Alongside is kept an idol of Maa Durga too. The Shiv Ling inside this temple is not man made. It is self created (formed on its own) making this temple special, for its miraculous powers.

The meaning of the name Budha Kedar is like this: ‘Budha’ meaning old or aged and Kedar being one amongst the many names of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is present in His aged form or personification, in the temple here. There is a reason & story behind this. The Pandavas were tainted with the blood of their own kith and kin. Owing to this, the Pandavas were guided by the Sage Vyasa, to worship Lord Shiva for redemption. They did so but Lord Shiva too, being upset with the Pandavas, did not wish to appear before them. In order to avoid them, Lord Shiva assumed the form of Nandi the bull and hid Himself amongst the other animals living on the slopes of the mountains. However, Bheem recognized Lord Shiva in the guise of Nandi the bull, and wanted to catch hold of Him. Even as he tried doing that, the Nandi form of Shiva got divided into many fragments & disappeared thus. Since an aged form or manifestation of Lord Shiva is worshipped here, it is called as the temple of Aged Shiva. Duryodhana too performed penance at this place. After the great war of Kurukshetra, the Pandavas set out in search of Lord Shiva. On the way, they met Rishi Balkhilya on Mount Bhrigu. The sage Balkhilya showed Pandavas the way, by directing them to an old man, who, he told them was meditating near the confluence of the two rivers. When the Pandavas reached that point, the old man sitting there vanished behind a Shiv Ling existing there. The temple has been built above and around that Shiv Ling. This Shiv Ling is considered to be the largest in north India and is also said to bear the imprints of the Pandavas’ hands, even now.
