Kangra, a small district in Himachal Pradesh, is not a place one would usually associate with Durga Pooja. Yet, over the last 13 years, Durga Pooja has been a regular feature at Shivanandam Nivas, old Kangra.  What started as a small celebration now attracts devotees from all parts of the world.
The festival is a ten day celebration that invokes and venerates the Universal Divine Mother (Durga). It is a symbol of good vanquishing evil. Over those ten days, some of the highlights include traditional rituals (such as poojas, Chandi Havan), traditional dancing (Dhunuchi) and free meals for those who visit.

Since inception, every year, Babaji has painstakingly handcrafted every idol. Using eco-friendly materials and natural colours, it is a remarkable example of caring for nature. For devotees or visitors, it is difficult not to be mesmerised by the sheer beauty of Mother Durga. The beauty stems from love of the Divine Mother for all her children. On the surface, one might think of Her only as an idol. However, as you stand in front of Her, take a moment, quieten your mind, instantly, you will connect with Her. You will see her face light up with Joy and Love for her children; see Her dance with every beat of the drum and see the tears in Her eyes as she departs on the tenth day. You will witness Her Grace. Many have experienced several miracles in her presence. Here are to such instances.

On the ninth day of celebrations, all devotees were seated and singing praises of the Divine Mother. Just as the hymns exalting Mother Kali (one of the many forms of the Goddess) commenced, out of nowhere a black butterfly appeared. This butterfly hovered around the deity and went on to touch every single arm of Mother Durga. She hovered, for a bit and then sat on one arm, before going to the next. Finally, the butterfly flew towards Babaji, the devotees and then flew away. All the locals, who have lived in that area their entire life, have never seen black butterflies. Where the butterfly appeared from and where she disappeared to, remains a mystery. It was as though the Divine Mother had assumed this form to bless all devotees.

On the final day, the idol was taken for immersion. As soon as it was set on the river bank, it became so heavy that it refused to budge despite efforts of 25 strong men. We then noticed a small baby mouse at the base of the idol. The mouse was safely rescued and set free. As soon as this happened, all of a sudden, the idol became as light as a feather. We could lift it with ease for immersion. This was Her way of protecting the mouse from drowning. She is, after all, the Universal Divine Mother. She was just ensuring the safety of all her children.

As you leave Kangra, following the festivities, you will realise the connection that has been formed with the Mother and Babaji. It is that connection deep within you were always seeking, but did not know that you were looking for it. If you are reading this, know that this too is Her Grace.
It is an invitation. She is calling you…home.
