*“Ashram”*

After the Trust was established and everyone expressed their wish, I began looking for land for the Ashram. Whenever someone mentioned a good piece of land somewhere, I would go see it. Some lands in the mountains were very beautiful, but after hearing their price, I would run away. Some lands were reasonably priced, but they were too far from home. Some lands nearby were so big that we didn’t really need that much. My heart just wouldn’t settle anywhere. I would go to see the lands, but every time I returned disappointed.

By now, I was exhausted. Gurudev would always say, “While doing your karma, you will eventually reach the right place.” Those words alone kept me moving forward. In this way, I kept searching for land for four long years! The Trust didn’t even have any money to buy land. But before my Guru’s command, my own thoughts meant nothing.

After so many years of running around, I was worn out — I couldn’t do it anymore. One day, I sat in the temple and said to God, “I can’t do this anymore. I will no longer go looking for land, because I am completely tired now. My heart doesn’t tell me that any place is right for the Ashram. Please forgive me. No one supports me, no one comes forward. The Trust was formed by Your will, but what after that? I can’t keep running anymore. The land is too expensive, God — this is beyond us.”

“I have done my part, I have fulfilled my karma — now it’s up to You. If something happens, it’s good; if not, that’s fine too. Deep within, I have no personal desire for any of this. Following Your command is my only duty. God, now I will not go.” Saying this, I felt peaceful.

After that, whenever someone told me about land, I simply refused. I felt there was no point — nothing was going to happen. What was the use of running around? So I forgot about the Ashram and the land entirely.

Some time passed. It was the time of Durga Puja. I was sitting in the ceremony; there were many people. The Navratri festival was going on. After the worship, my father and a neighbor were sitting together, talking about something.

My father called out to me and said, “Son, this gentleman wants to speak with you about something.”

I went near and sat down…
