*“Ashram”*
Keeping the thought of the ashram in mind, we set out on our journey — a pilgrimage on foot from Rishikesh to Kedarnath. It was the second day of the journey. The place was Shivpuri, a little beyond Rishikesh. We had been walking since five in the morning. As we walked along one side of the road, on the other side a few little puppies were playing.
Suddenly, one of them — a tiny little one — ran across to me, and came straight to me as if he had known me for ages! And this was nothing new. Till today, in every journey I’ve taken, these little companions of mine — small children or young animals — always come running to greet me. Many times, they’ve even accompanied me as far as Shrikhand Kailash!
Their love is beyond words.
This little one came to me, started playing, tugging at my clothes. I sat down and said to him gently, “Listen carefully — don’t come with us. We have to walk very far. Don’t follow us.” We tried hard to send him away, but he wouldn’t listen. We would walk away quickly, yet he’d come running behind us again!
At one point, he disappeared. We were relieved, thinking it was good that he hadn’t strayed from his group — how could he walk with us in this terrible heat!
It was scorching — 45 degrees Celsius — and we were walking on foot. Everyone was nearly fainting from the heat. There wasn’t a single big tree along the way to sit under. Then we spotted some bushes, and that was enough for us — we sat down, drank some water, and ate biscuits.
Just then, we saw the little fellow again — running toward us! We exclaimed, “Oh God, he’s back again!” He came running, panting heavily in the heat. We gave him water to drink, made him sit beside us in the shade, and he too ate some biscuits with us.
I told everyone, “Now he’s not going anywhere. He’s going to be our companion for the rest of this journey.” Because I could see it in his expression — he wanted to come along. That’s why he had been waiting for us. There was nothing we could do.
But why had he come? That would be understood later…
To be continued…
