Dev Badri Shaligram*

My heart was filled with joy — every burden seemed to have lifted. Guruji’s embrace felt like a healing balm soothing every pain within. We returned to our room, our minds calm, everyone softly humming the kirtan tunes. Now, all that remained was the anticipation for the next day.

My heart kept replaying the events of the day — thinking about the divine play of the Lord. Sometimes a smile would appear on my face, and at times, I would again sink into silence.

In the morning, we all woke up and began planning for the day. After roaming around Rishikesh during the afternoon, evening descended once more. We reached the kirtan hall again — this time entering through the back door as if we were some special guests! ????

Guruji was seated on the front stage. The moment he saw us, he smiled brightly and signaled for us to come up. The instant we got his signal, we flew to the stage like birds. He embraced us again, moved others aside, and made us sit next to him, saying to everyone, “These are my friends!”

Hearing those words filled my heart with pure happiness. I closed my eyes and lost myself in the joy of the kirtan. After some time, Guruji came close and said softly, “I just received a phone call. As soon as it’s done, all of you must come to my room — I want to show you my temple.”

Saying this, he got up and left. People continued dancing in devotion, but my eyes were now fixed on the door of the hall. After about an hour, one of his disciples came and said, “Guruji is calling you.”

We rushed as though something precious awaited us. It was such a beautiful moment — Guruji stood waiting in his room. Holding my hand, he said, “Come, let’s go inside my temple first.”

The moment we entered, my eyes welled up. It was a single room — but it felt like the universe of the Divine! The temple was filled with idols and sacred forms — Lord Krishna, Lord Narasimha, and many *Shaligrams*. Guruji told us that wherever he travels across the world, these deities go with him.

He showed us each idol, explaining where it came from. Some of them were centuries old. I was spellbound by his devotion, overwhelmed by his emotion.

And then, I couldn’t help but smile — at God’s mysterious play! I thought to myself, “O Lord, what a game You play! I was trying to run far away, yet You pulled me back to Yourself!”

Guruji kept speaking, describing the significance of each sacred object. But my mind had stopped working — my heart was elsewhere. As he showed me the Shaligram, a voice from within me whispered, “I want one too.”

“What is this, O Lord?” I asked myself. “Why do I suddenly wish for a Shaligram?” Yet deep inside, it was as though God Himself said, “Yes, you will have one — I wish to go with you.”

I shook my head, scolding myself — “Stop thinking! I’m someone who worships Shiva and Durga! I don’t even know how to worship a Shaligram!”

There were hundreds of divine forms there — countless Shaligrams! After the temple visit, we all sat together in Guruji’s room and had a long, heartfelt conversation. I opened up to him, sharing my thoughts and feelings. He was very pleased and spoke warmly.

He asked about Kangra and promised to visit the Kangra ashram someday. After talking for a long time, it was time for us to leave. Guruji embraced me once again, gently touching my hair, and said,

“You take the name of Shiva, and I take the name of Krishna — but both are one, and will always remain one.”

He hugged me tightly. We bid him farewell with hearts full of love and reverence.
