Dev Badri Shaligram*
When the walking pilgrimage began, I silently asked forgiveness in my heart, saying — “O Lord, when I reach Badrinath, I will buy a Shaligram from some shop!”
I had even brought an asana (prayer mat) for You, but it remained empty; I was carrying it along without using it.
These thoughts kept moving in my mind. Then another thought arose — “It’s alright, I can at least do something.”
A feeling came over me — Let me walk while remembering the name of God!
So I took the rosary in my hand and began to chant:
*“Shri Krishna Sharanam Mama”* — meaning, “For me, Shri Krishna alone is the refuge.”
In happiness or sorrow, in every situation, I surrender myself to Shri Krishna.
It is a mantra that grants peace and shelter to devotees.
I began reciting this mantra while walking every day — remembering the Lord continuously.
It felt as though, through this mantra, He Himself was walking beside us!
The truth is, miracles happen with everyone.
This life shows us something new every single day.
But those who take refuge in God — who remember Him before every act, every moment — are taken under His divine protection.
He makes them experience spiritual joy and bliss at every step.
And if, even after chanting His name, peace still seems missing in your life —
then it is essential to take refuge in a Guru.
The Guru gives you the strength to purify your spiritual path.
Because though you can walk on this path without a Guru,
only the Guru can truly tell you — where to pause, and how to escape if you get trapped.
That’s why the lives of spiritual people are entirely different from ordinary ones.
Their only longing is to experience the divine play (leela) of God.
With every step, amidst God’s leela, I kept chanting His name —
high mountains, patches of sunlight and shade — yet my feet kept moving on their own.
The body would tire, yes, but this journey wasn’t of the body — it was of the soul!
That’s why the soul within wouldn’t let me stop.
I often wondered how we managed to walk such long distances — it was beyond understanding!
Wherever we halted along the way, we would visit temples, sing bhajans and kirtans.
But one thing astonished me — whether it was a temple of Lord Shiva or Mother Durga —
in every temple, I saw Shaligrams!
Before this, I had done many pilgrimages, visited many temples — but never seen this before.
Every time I entered the sanctum, my eyes would fall upon a Shaligram placed there.
And each time, I couldn’t help but smile and say —
“Ah, I understand, my Lord — You’re reminding me that I must definitely bring a Shaligram from Badrinath!”
In every temple, He was gently reminding me of the promise hidden in my heart —
a feeling that only He knew.
