Lord Shiva is deeply loving toward His devotees; seeing them in pain makes His own heart weep. Such is Lord Bholenath. How would He allow Ravana to remain in such suffering? When power is joined with devotion, a new form emerges. This story of Ravana and Lord Shiva is extremely beautiful. Come, let us read further.
Ravana began to praise Lord Shiva. Dashanan started singing all the hymns of Shiva mentioned in the Samaveda. What an atmosphere it must have been! Describing it in words is extremely difficult. The entire Himalayan range began to resonate with Ravana’s singing. Mahadev closed His eyes and became absorbed in the devotion of His devotee. Ravana too knew how to enchant the Lord.
To please Him, Ravana transformed one of his ten heads into the gourd of a veena, made one of his arms the base and strings, and used his own nerves to form the strings, thus creating a veena. This instrument came to be known as the Rudra Veena. In this way, Ravana began to sing the Lord’s praises through its melodies. Such was Ravana’s devotion that he offered every single part of his body to the Lord.
This story is a form of pure devotion—where the Lord, firm in His resolve, remained displeased, yet the devotee did not give up thinking he had erred and that God was angry with him. Instead, he intensified his devotion. He used his strength only to please the Lord. Forgetting tears, pain, and suffering, his sole purpose was to win over God. Now he began to delight the Lord through music.
The Lord too became enchanted by his music. His eyes closed, captivated by Ravana’s melodies. Ravana sang in different ragas, and the entire Mount Kailash began to sway with devotion. Ravana’s arrogance and his cruelty were forgotten by all, for such is the power of devotion.
