“Kailash”

Kailash is revered in many religions. We have already read about some of the beliefs of Buddhism; now let us learn about those who, through the strength of their spiritual power, conquered Kailash—those who were able to reach there by their own inner power. These experiences are extremely thrilling and present a beautiful expression of strength and faith. Just as Ravana once lifted Kailash, there is another example of devotion and faith in Buddhism: the great guru Milarepa. Let us come to know—who was Milarepa?

Who was Milarepa

Milarepa was born around 1052 CE in the Gungthang region of Tibet. His real name was Thopaga. His father, Mila Sherab Gyaltsen, was a prosperous merchant. When Milarepa was still young, his father passed away. After his father’s death, his uncle and aunt seized all the property and forced Milarepa, his mother, and his sister to live a life like slaves. The cruelty, humiliation, and poverty they endured filled Milarepa’s heart with deep anger and a desire for revenge.

To take revenge, Milarepa’s mother sent him to learn tantric practices (black magic). Living in the Himalayas, he studied tantric arts, and through this practice a powerful force awakened within him. He became a very accomplished tantric practitioner. Milarepa attained such mastery in tantra that he once performed terrifying black magic at a wedding ceremony. Because of his magic, the entire building where the wedding was taking place collapsed, and many people inside were killed. Although the anger born of oppression was avenged, Milarepa’s heart became filled with intense guilt.

After that incident, this realization began to consume him, and he clearly understood:

> “Through my actions, I have pushed myself toward hell.”

Therefore, to attain liberation from his deeds, he began searching for a true guru. He set out in search, and the saying proved true that one can even find God when the search is sincere. The guru who could free Milarepa from the burden of his actions appeared before him. At that time, the great Tibetan master Marpa Lotsawa was the only teacher who could show him the path to liberation. Thus, Milarepa took refuge at his feet.
