“Kailash”
Who knows how many unresolved mysteries lie hidden within this Kailash! This is not an ordinary Himalayan mountain, but a mysterious one. It is a source of energy from which positive energy continuously flows. This mountain, which grants liberation from sins, captivates every heart. Come, let us now read further—this story from the life of Milarepa.
Milarepa’s story shows that if a person truly realizes their mistakes, correcting them is not impossible. Such is the power of a guru’s guidance—it can show a person the path beyond every sin. A guru may test you in many ways, and if you truly wish to learn and attain something, you must be prepared for every test. And in life, someone always comes to show you the way. Milarepa’s story is filled with wisdom and answers to many questions. We are not reading it merely because he climbed Mount Kailash; rather, we must understand his life, his words about Kailash, and the lessons he learned from it. So let us move forward.
“Milarepa”
After meeting his guru, Milarepa devoted himself to serving him. When Milarepa reached Marpa, Marpa did not initiate him immediately, because no guru accepts a disciple without testing him. First, Marpa made Milarepa build a house of stones, then, without any reason, ordered it to be demolished. He made him repeat this process many times. But Milarepa longed for his guru’s presence, so he endured every test. As he continued working, Milarepa’s body became covered with wounds; his guru did not even give him food. All of this was solely for the purification of his past karma.
Milarepa was completely broken physically, but his faith remained unshaken. Finally, seeing his devotion and trust, Marpa accepted him as his disciple and initiated him into Mahamudra Yoga and the Six Yogas of Naropa.
After receiving initiation, Milarepa went into the caves of the Himalayas. He lived alone in those caves throughout his life and devoted himself entirely to spiritual practice. He survived on alms or nettles (a thorny herb that grows in the Himalayas) while performing austerities. Eating only nettles, he spent his time in meditation, and his body turned green because of it. For many years, Milarepa remained naked amid snow and ice. With no food to eat and no clothes to wear, in the freezing cold of the Himalayas, this yogi dedicated his life solely to spiritual practice. Through the initiations and yogic practices given by his guru, he attained many powers. He conquered ghosts, fear, hunger, and cold.
And then, while continuing his practice there, he attained Buddhahood (enlightenment).
