“Kailash”
Whoever comes near Kailash with pure devotion becomes filled with the Lord’s compassion and mercy. Milarepa spent his life in the lap of the Himalayas, and through this he attained the divine power of Kailash. Let us move forward on this journey and see how, through his divine strength, he attained this sacred vision.
“Milarepa”
A dialogue took place between Milarepa and the Bon practitioner, and they decided that whoever reached the summit of Mount Kailash first would earn the spiritual right to it and be declared the victor.
At that moment, Naro Bonchung used his Bon practices and his magical drum / flying power. The sound of the drum echoed across Kailash, and with the help of that power, Bonchung began to fly. On the other hand, Milarepa had attained many powers through mantra practice and deep meditation. His power was immense. As he chanted his mantra, Kailash itself resounded—on one side the sound of the drum, and on the other the sound of the mantra. Then, through Milarepa’s mantra power, rays of sunlight appeared, and Milarepa, sitting upon those sun rays, flew toward the summit of Kailash.
In this way, Milarepa reached first and attained spiritual supremacy. He was able to claim Kailash through his mantra power, and Bonchung, witnessing the strength of Milarepa’s realization, bowed his head in humility. Milarepa then established Kailash as a Buddhist spiritual center.
After his defeat, Naro Bonchung of the Bon tradition was granted the nearby mountain “Bonri,” which came to be regarded as his new sacred site. This story should not be seen as a conflict between religions, but as a symbolic tale of spiritual attainment, discipline, dedicated practice, and the renunciation of ego.
