| Char Dham Yatra – towards Badrinath, Day 42 |

Having seen and enjoyed the beauty of Choupata, we will now travel to Tungnath. Let us first learn of its glory.

Tungnath

Tungnath is a mountain situated in the district of Rudraprayag, in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal region. The Tungnath temple perched on the Tungnath mountain, is the highest among the 5 Kedars. This temple dates back several centuries. One form from among the 5 Kedars of Lord Shiva, is worshipped here. This temple was built by the Pandavas in order to please & appease Lord Shiva, who was angered by the mass destruction of lives they caused in the war of Kurukshetra. The peak ofTungnath is also the point of origin of 3 streams that mingle together to form the Akshakamini river. The temple is located 3 kms from Choupata and can be reached on foot from there. This temple nestled amidst beautiful mountains showers its ethereal splendor and luster all around.

This lovely settlement perched at a height of about 12000-14000 feet is one amongst the most beautiful spots in the Garhwal Himalayas. In the months of Jan-Feb, this place is usually covered with snow, but its exquisite beauty in full bloom has to be seen to be believed, during the months of July-Aug. During these two months, miles and miles of velvety, lush green meadows blooming with beautiful flowers, are an enchanting sight to behold. It is because of its exquisite beauty, that seasoned tourists do not hesitate to label this place as mini – Switzerland. A most distinguishing feature of this place is that it is the only such place in the whole of the Garhwal region, where one can access these lush green meadows even in buses, which means that this extraordinarily place is accessible even to average tourists & devout seekers coming to this area.
