Char Dham Yatra – Pilgrimage to the Himalayas

Day 10 – Towards Gangotri

Yesterday we had the Darshan of Mother Yamuna. Having redeemed ourselves from all our sins committed knowingly or unknowingly, by bathing in the Mother’s holy stream, we shall now proceed to Gangotri. Mother Ganga, the bestower of liberation, frees every devotee who goes to her, of every sin of theirs.

Come on, let us go now to have the Darshan of Mother Ganga. Hail Mother Ganga! Jai …

The vehicles are all ready and waiting in Janki Chatti. All of you load your baggage into your respective vehicles. The condition of roads on the Char Dham Yatra is not all that good. In fact, their condition has only worsened, after the tragic disaster in 2013. Therefore, it is not possible for us to travel in big buses, on these routes. We will have to travel in the smaller 12 or 15 seater vehicles instead. Now that all of you are seated in your vehicles, we shall depart for Uttarkashi,  passing again through Badkot and touching Dharasu on the way.

                             Dharasu

Dharasu is a town situated in Uttarkashi district. This town is settled on the banks of river Bhagirathi. Dharasu is at a distance of 106 kms from Janki Chatti. This town too wears the beauty of nature all around, accompanied by the sweet babbling sound of river Bhagirathi, all the time. Dharasu is prone to frequent landslides at several points, with rocks and boulders falling from the mountain heights and blocking roads. This is a normal occurrence in Dharasu and it slows down the speed / movement of vehicles here. With the road being closed, many of the travelers are enjoying their time with photography while some others are busy chatting away in groups. All said and done, it is indeed a joyful sight and experience. When people from diverse locations can become one family on these pilgrimages or during these in-transit halts and even share their tales of joy and sorrow with each other, why do we forget later on that we all are truly one family. Why do we forget to take care of each other? Anyways, we have begun moving forward again at a very slow speed. Halting for tea along the way, we arrive into Uttarkashi.

Come, let us know about Uttarkashi …

                           Uttarkashi

If you were to travel to Uttarkashi from Rishikesh, then the distance to be covered is 155 kms. This town too is located on the banks of Bhagirathi. From a religious perspective, Uttar Kashi is a very important destination. The famous temple of Lord Vishwanath is situated here. This town also abounds in the splendor of Nature. On one side, you can see rivers flowing down between the mountains and on the other side you can see dense forests wrapping the mountains in green. You can have the pleasure of mountain climbing here and it is an important destination for those who love trekking too! This is a prominent place for  those traveling to Gangotri. This place surrounded by mountains on all sides, is both stunning and extraordinary. In the Puranas, Uttarkashi has also been referred to as ‘Sowmya Kashi’. It was in Uttarkashi that King Bhagiratha performed severe penance to bring Mother Ganga down on earth. Pleased by his penance, Lord Brahma granted him the boon, assuring that Lord Shiva would assume retention of Mother Ganga, when She would descend upon Earth. From then, this town was called the town of Lord Vishwanath and over time, it has come to be called as Uttarkashi.

Tomorrow we shall delve into the history of Uttarkashi Vishwanath Temple.
