Char Dham Yatra – Pilgrimage to the Himalayas

Day 11 – Towards Gangotri

Absolutely pure, adorable & delectable, where Bhagirathi flows along with her sweet babble, where the reverberating sounds of bells and sacred chants can be heard emanating from the temple; you are all most welcome to this beautiful town of Uttarkashi. Today we shall listen to the greatness and glory of this beautiful destination. After the day long journey yesterday and a good rest overnight, we have all woken up early this morning. In this Kashi that is full of temples, we shall have Darshan of the Uttarkashi Vishwanath temple today. So, having had our breakfast, let us all congregate at one spot and Hail Viahwanath ji with our reverent shouts of Jaikar! Come on, let us proceed forward. Bhole Baba ki Jai! Mahashakti Mata ki Jai!

Vishwanath Temple

Vishwanath temple is the most important and ancient, sacred temple in this region. Amongst the many temples in Uttarkashi, the Lord Vishwanath temple is unique in its glory and heritage. Lord Shiva is worshipped everyday in this temple. Every evening, sacred hymns accompanied by the sound of temple bells, are sung by the priests in praise of the Lord. King Bhagiratha had performed penance at this spot and pleased by his penance, Lord Brahma had granted him a boon that it is Lord Shiva who could control and retain the gushing waters of Mother Ganga who would descend from heaven with a very high velocity and great force. Thereafter, King Bhagiratha prayed to Lord Shiva to bring Mother Ganga down to earth and assume her retention. Lord Shiva accepted his prayer and ever since then, this town came to be known as the town of Lord Vishwanath. Later, over a period of time, the name Uttarkashi came into use. Lord Shiva is present in the from of a Shiv Ling, in Shri Kashi Vishwanath temple. This Shiv Ling is inclined towards the South. Devi Parvati and Ganesh ji are also present in the inner Sanctum Sanctorum. The bull Nandi is seated in the outer room of the temple. Also present here are the idols of Dhyan Gopal and Rishi Markandeya. The atmosphere and ambience in this temple is very serene. Lord Shiva is referred to as Bhole Baba because He very compassionately embraces every devotee who comes to Him, forgetting all their sins and forgiving them for the same. Whenever you visit any temple, do not entertain any fear within you because Paramatma can be attained not through fear but through Love alone. He understands only the language of Love and Silence. He knows even before we pray, that his devotee has come to pray to Him. Therefore, always hold Love and Silence in your prayers.

O wow! What a wonderful ambience. Come, let us have some Sankeertan in the temple courtyard and later have Darshan of the Shakti temple here.

Shakti Temple

Within the courtyard of Lord Vishwanath temple, in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum is the temple dedicated to Mother Parvati. This temple is filled with tremendous power and energy. With the mere mention of the name of Shakti, one experiences Shakti or energy in the body. The major attraction here is a large and heavy Trishul – Trident, which is 26 feet tall and was used by Devi Durga to vanquish the evil demons. This is a Divine Trident that Mother Durga had borne to slay the demon Mahishasura. One can feel / experience its power merely by touching it. Mother Shakti is perceived here as this large Trident or Trishul. Seeing that Trishul itself is equivalent to the Darshan of Mother Shakti. This Trident is thousands of years old and is considered as one amongst the oldest relics of Uttarakhand. It has been kept close the main Shiv temple. One very surprising and unique feature of this Trishul is that it cannot be moved even if you were to exert your entire body weight to try and do so but, it moves with just the flick of a finger of the hand! How wondrous and blissful a sight this is! You may pray to Mother here, for strength to vanquish the enemy that lies within. The Mother banishes each and every problem or crisis.

Having had the Darshan of the two Divine temples, let us proceed for lunch now. Tomorrow we shall know more about some of the special features and aspects of Uttarkashi.
