Char Dham Yatra – Pilgrimage to the Himalayas

Day 20 – Towards Kedarnath

Yesterday, we left for Kedar from Gangotri and reached the Chandravadani temple en route. Let us now speak of the glory of this temple.

Chandravadani

Mother Sati, disregarding the advice of her husband Lord Shiva, attended the Yajna  organised by her father Prajapati and thus courted insult and grief at the hands of her father, due to her insistence and neglect of Lord Shiva’s advice. Unable to bear the grief and insults hurled by her Father, upon Lord Shiva, She consigned herself to the flames of the sacrificial fire and gave up her life. Thereafter, in anger, the ‘Ganas’ or hordes (followers) of Lord Shiva disrupted the entire ceremony. Lord Mahadev carried the sacred body of Mother Sati away and began roaming the skies lost in utter grief, behaving in a deranged manner. The entire creation – animate and inanimate, was shocked and stupefied by this behaviour of the Lord. The Demi-Gods and Rishis fled to the feet of Lord Vishnu and prayed for His intervention. Lord Vishnu, using His Sudarshan Chakra, fragmented the sacred body of Mother Sati into 52 portions that fell away in different directions. A Shakti Peeth was built at every spot where a portion of Mother Sati’s fragmented body fell. One of these 52 portions fell on Mt. Chandrakoot of Tihari Garhwal, where we have the temple today, known by the name Chandravadani. It is said that the last portion of Mother Sati’s sacred visage on Lord Shiva’s shoulder was Her main body portion and after this too fell off, He returned to His true self. This story recalls and alludes to that state or condition of being where it is expounded that a Purusha – the masculine form is lifeless without the Nari – the feminine aspect. Similarly, it is also said that Shiv Himself is Shakti and without Shakti, He is just a Shav – a corpse.

The Mother is seated in the form of a Shri Yantra (a mystical diagram consisting of 9 interlocking triangles that represent the cosmos and the human body), inside the Sanctum Sanctorum of the temple. There is no idol of the Mother here. Her Shri Yantra itself is considered as Her form and for this reason, the priests who bathe and decorate Her everyday, do so with a cloth tied around their eyes before entering Her Sanctum Sanctorum. As per popular belief, whosoever else has tried entering the Mother’s Sanctum Sanctorum has been rendered blind. It is said that to this day, Mother Bhagavati goes to a well located at a place close by called ‘Arora’, to have her bath. Very rarely is some fortunate devotee blessed to even see this well. One can have the Darshan of Mother Kunjapuri and Mother Surkanda too and see the peaks of Chaukhambha and Khaint, the towns of Mansuri and Tihari, from the Mother’s edifice. One has to ascend to the peak of the Chandrakoot mountain, passing through the midst of Buransh flower trees, large shrubs of the Bayberry fruit, Pine trees, Cedars, Surai and other Himalayan trees, shrubs and tubers. The air and water here are very salubrious & healthy. So, the spiritual ardour and peace that one experiences, seeing and absorbing the scenic beauty of Nature all around, cannot be described in words. May the Mother fulfill everyone’s wishes.

We shall next have the Darshan of one more temple whose history is extremely interesting. Having had the Darshan of Mother Chandravadani, we have all boarded our vehicles and driven ahead with spirited Jaikars of the Mother. With this, we have now arrived at the Budakedar Temple. Come, let us know the history of this temple.
