| Char Dham Yatra – towards Kedarnath, Day 26 |

Having had Darshan of the confluence of of the rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini and the Koteshwar Mahadev temple in Rudra Prayag, today we shall have the Darshan of Kartik Swamy temple and also get to know of its history.

Kartik Swami Temple

Kartik Swami temple is situated on Krodh Parvat (mountain) at a distance of 3 kms from a village in Rudra Prayag, called Kanak Chauri. This temple is situated at quite a height, surrounded by the powerful Himalayan range of mountains. Kartikey Swami temple is one among the most sacred tourist destinations in Rudraprayag. This is the lone temple in Uttarakhand dedicated to Lord Kartikey. This very ancient temple of Lord Kartikey is not only a divine place but a very beautiful tourist attraction too. The temple is dedicated to Kartikey, the elder son of Lord Shiva. Lord Kartikey is addressed and worshipped as Kartik Murugan Swami in South India. This ancient temple situated on Krodh Parvat has a history of its own. It is believed that Lord Kartikey is sitting here in penance even today, in His liberated subtle form. The sound of one or the other of the scores of bells hung here can be heard all the time, even at a distance of 800 meters. This temple is open to devout seekers all 12 months of the year & the Chaukhamba, Trishul and other mountain ranges are clearly visible from the temple courtyard. A two day festival is celebrated here on the occasion of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi. The Childless couples make a contribution through the offering of lamps to the deity, during the festival of Kartik Poornima. These couples stay up the whole night standing and holding lamps in their hands, praying for the boon of having a progeny. Their prayers fructify eventually. During Kartik Poornima and the Jyesht month overlapping May and June as per the Hindu calendar, the village officiating as the administrative headquarters in the region, organizes a special religious function in the temple.

As per our Puranas, it is said that Lord Shiva once told His two sons – Lord Ganesh and Lord Katikey that between them, the one who finishes circumambulating the entire Universe first and presents himself before Him (Lord Shiva), would secure the special privilege and right of being worshipped first (before any other God). Upon hearing this, Lord Kartikey immediately mounted his conveyance – the peacock and set out to accomplish the task given by His father. Whereas, Lord Ganesh had a dip in the Ganges and then began circumambulating His parents. Seeing this, Lord Ganesh’s parents asked Him why He was going around them, to which Lord Ganesh replied that the entire Universe is contained in  one’s Mother and Father. Hearing this, both Shiv and Parvati were very pleased and granted the exclusive right of being worshipped first to Lord Ganesh. On the other side, as Lord Katikey was returning from His circumambulation of the Universe, Sage Narada told Him about what had transpired in the meantime. Lord Kartikey was upset and dismayed by what he heard. Upon reaching Kailash, he handed over His flesh to Mother Parvati and His bones to Father Shiva and then set out to perform penance in His Niravan rupa (liberated subtle form). He arrived at Krodh Parvat and since then, He is worshipped here. It is believed that His bones are present in this temple even to this day and worshipped by thousands of devotees.

If you ever come to Rudra Prayag district for a holiday, you must have Darshan of the Divine Kartikey Swami temple. Such is its glory and greatness. We shall begin our onward journey after having Darshan here.
