Kailash”

How calm Lord Bholenath is, how loving, how simple! On earth, Kailash is that place—after seeing it, nothing else feels left to be seen. It is the place on earth where even Ravana himself performed the Tandava. A place before which every religion bows. In the form of a supreme power, Kailash is the only place where all divine energies reside together. Come, let us now read further—how the Lord forgave Ravana, and what divine play unfolded!

The hymn that emerged from Ravana’s mouth came to be known as the Shiva Tandava. Ravana himself described the fierce form of Lord Bholenath. This is that Shiva Tandava—if the Lord were to dance upon hearing it, the destruction of the world would occur. The fire that rises from within a calm volcano itself is the form of the Shiva Tandava. Playing the Rudra Veena, Ravana was singing the Shiva Tandava. All of Kailash became enchanted by it. Lord Bholenath opened His eyes; from the bliss within Him, the big toe of His foot lifted upward. The moment His toe rose, both of Ravana’s hands were released. The Lord was pleased by the devotion of His supreme devotee. His heart was filled with compassion.

He freed Ravana from this suffering. Pleased by Ravana’s hymn, Bholenath bestowed upon him the title “Ravaneshwar” and liberated him. The Lord addressed Ravana as His supreme devotee and granted him that exalted place. And that was the moment when the Lord named him Ravana. The word Ravana means “one who cries or wails.” Before this, Ravana’s name was Dashanan and Dashagriva. Because he wept in pain, Bholenath gave him the name Ravana.

The Lord also granted Ravana the divine sword called Chandrahās and accepted him as a great devotee of Shiva. This is why Ravana is regarded not merely as a demon, but also as a great devotee of Shiva and a learned scholar.
