Char Dham Yatra – Pilgrimage to the Himalayas

Day 16 – Gangotri Darshan

Gangotri Temple Darshan

Having learnt of the celestial traditions of the temple, we shall partake of Mother’s Darshan today. The pilgrims are all waiting in the Darshan queue, after having listened to the story of the temple. The scorching sun is protecting us from the freezing chill drifting in from the mountains, even as the devotees, all queued up in lines, are hailing Mother Ganga all the while with resounding Jaikars. The devotees move ahead with faith & conviction, despite the huge crowd. The grand temple ahead and seated inside the Sanctum Sanctorum is the Queen Ganga, the One who washes away all the sins of Her devotees. With Her grace, all problems and disasters are averted. Whosoever approach Mother Ganga – the Liberator, with a pure heart, they are freed from the consequences of any bad deeds but, it is very important that they go to Her with true intent and the feeling of complete surrender to Her. Human beings are ready to give up on someone for the smallest of mistakes. They even criticize and abuse that person who has committed a mistake because, the truth is that they do not have any belief in themselves. Mother Ganga however receives and embraces anyone and everyone who come to her, whether good or bad and purifies them. The devout shouts of Jaikar from the devotees and the ‘Har Har’ chant from the gushing waters of the Ganga along its banks, Her fast and forceful flow, even as She remains seated inside the temple in the form of an idol. Her mere Darshan itself is an out of the world experience and our eyes turn moist, beholding Her beautiful form. That the Mother may please forgive every sin of ours, is the prayer echoing in everyone’s heart. Having had Mother’s Darshan in the temple, let us now proceed to the steps on the river bank.

The Bhagirath Shila or rock on which King Bhagiratha sat in austere penance to bring Mother Ganga down on Earth, is located close to the temple. The other deities worshipped in this temple include Yamuna, Lord Shiva, Devi Saraswati, Annapoorna and Maha Durga. Mother Gangotri is the provider of Liberation. It is also considered as the foremost amongst pilgrim centers for people who follow the Hindu religion, tradition and customs, to perform a prayer ceremony at, along with offerings of food, clothing and other items, in remembrance and dedication to the departed souls of their immediate parents and forefathers. After offering prayers in the temple, the devout take a holy dip in the Bhagirathi, using the steps leading down into the river. Every pilgrim who comes here, also fills a container of holy water from the Bhagirathi, to carry back home. The water is very pure and sacred. It is used for all auspicious activities and occasions. The Ganga water collected from the Bhagirathi is also offered as a consecration in Kedarnath & Rameshwaram temples. Pilgrims can also spend some time sitting on the banks of the Bhagirathi, after taking a holy dip and offering their prayers to Mother Ganga. They can close their eyes and listen to the sounds of the speedy gushing flow of the river. It feels as though the speedy flow of the river waters is meant to redeem the pilgrims from every sin that they may have committed. I shall now, as we all sit on the banks of the Bhagirathi, narrate to you the reason for Mother Ganga’s descent upon earth.

King Sagar of the Suryavansh dynasty decided to have an Ashwamedha Yajna (a sacrificial fire oblation involving a royal stud-horse) conducted. In the course of this Yajna, his 10000 sons secured the allegiance of all those kingdoms that their stud galloped to, under the hegemony of the Suryavansh dynasty. The King of the Devas, Lord Indra became concerned by this development. Through some trickery, Indra caught hold of this royal stud and tied it up at Rishi Kapila’s ashram. The sons of King Sagar, thinking that the stud had been stolen by Kapil Muni behaved in a very brash and disrespectful manner with him and freed the stud from his ashram. Kapil Muni was pained by this unbecoming behaviour of King Sagar’s sons and so, he cursed them to be reduced to ashes! King Sagar approached Rishi Kapil, pleading for mercy & forgiveness, on behalf of his erring sons. Kapil Muni was moved by the King’s pleas and granted that if the river that flows in Heaven descends upon earth and consecrates these ashes (of King Sagar’s sons) with its sacred waters, then his sons would be liberated. However, King Sagar could not succeed in his efforts to secure the descent of Mother Ganga. Many other kings after him too engaged in penance, praying for the descent of Mother Ganga to earth, but they too were unsuccessful and even gave up their lives during the course of their penance. Finally, Bhagiratha the son of King Sagar, succeeded in securing the descent of Mother Ganga, through his austere penance. He then prayed to Lord Shiva, to moderate the tremendous force of Ganga’s descent. Consequently, Lord Shiva tied Mother Ganga in His matted locks and thus subdued the force of Her descent. Thereafter, purified by the flow of Ganga’s holy waters over their ashes, King Sagar’s sons were liberated.
