Char Dham Yatra – Pilgrimage to  the Himalayas

Day 14 – Towards Gangotri

Yesterday, we returned from Mukba while it was light still. Having spent time in Harsil and having absorbed its heavenly beauty within, we shall proceed towards Gangotri Dham today. The beauty of Nature here is such that nobody wants to leave and move forward. The simple life that the locals lead in these mountains, by the riverside and in the villages, has captured & captivated our hearts. As such there are a lot of trekking options also nearby and people can spend a lot of time on trekking, in these areas. However, we have to move forward as time is passing. Everyone has fallen madly in love with Harsil, after having spent 2 days in its scenic surroundings. Now, be seated in your respective vehicles, quickly! We will have Gangotri Darshan today. With shouts of victory (Jaikar), let us move forward.

Hail Mother Ganga!

As we move towards Gangotri drinking in the absorbing beauty of Nature, we pass by the snow clad peaks of the Himalayas, the dense jungles of Himalayan Cedar; our vehicles motoring along not on the earthly roads, but in Heaven itself! This panoramic vista is so very beautiful that words fail to describe it in all its splendor and glory! It is as if Harsil has settled down in everyone’s heart. Every one is immersed in speaking only about Harsil. Gangotri Dham is located at a distance of about an hour’s travel from Harsil village. Immersed in the energy of this beauty and engrossed in conversation with each other, nobody experienced any discomfort or exhaustion along the way. Before anyone could even realise it, an hour had already passed by and a crowd of vehicles can be seen now. The sound of temple bells echoing Jaikar can also be heard. We arrive quickly at our place of stay and disperse to our respective rooms. In a short while, we will have Darshan of Mother Ganga. Before that, let us learn about the greatness and glory of Gangotri.

Gangotri

Gangotri is the abode of Mother Ganga, situated on Her banks. Mother Ganga originates from Gomukh, the point one has to climb up to on foot, from Gangotri. We will know more about Gomukh later. For now, let us get to know of the greatness & glory of the Gangotri temple.

The scenery and ambience to the right of the Bhagirathi is extremely attractive and captivating. This place is located at an approximate distance of 100 kms, from the town of Uttarkashi. Lakhs of (hundreds of thousands of) faithful pilgrims visit this place in the May – Oct period every year, to have Darshan of sacred Mother Ganga, the One who purifies all – the downtrodden, the fallen and the corrupted. Like the temple at Yamunotri, the holy and purifying Gangotri temple too opens its doors every year on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, and closes them on Deepavali day every year.

The ancestor of Lord Rama and emperor of the Raghu dynasty – King Bhagiratha had performed very intense penance sitting on a boulder at this point. This temple was built in the 18th century, very close to this sacred boulder. Devi Bhagirathi (Mother Ganga) first touched upon earth at this point. The Pandavas too had conducted a great Yagna (a sacred fire ritual or oblation) at this place after the great war of Mahabharata, to propitiate all the Gods and pray to them for the peace and fulfillment of all the departed souls of their kith and kin. This very sacred and exquisite temple has been built using 20 feet tall slabs of White granite.

Pilgrims are spellbound upon seeing the temple and they simply cannot resist being bewitched by its grandeur and pristine purity. Also, there is a Shiv Ling formed naturally out of rock, which lies immersed in the Bhagirathi. The Darshan or sight of this naturally formed Shiv Ling is extremely enchanting and attractive to behold. Seeing this, one can perceive the manifest power and energy of the Devi. Lord Shiva sat at this spot spreading His flowing locks open. Despite repeated pleas from King Bhagiratha, Mother Ganga out of her ego did not wish to descend to the Earth. Becoming angry about this, Lord Shiva called out to her, asking her to descend upon Earth. Mother Ganga, carried away by the ego of Her speed and velocity began Her descent to Earth. Such was the force and fury of Her descent that all the three worlds began to quiver in fear. Lord Shankara, in order to vanquish Mother Ganga’s ego and also to absorb the impact of Her tremendous force of landing upon Earth, entangled Her and tied her up in His long locks of hair. Once Her ego had subsided, Lord Shankar untied one of His locks and thus, Mother Ganga flowed down as one stream that first touched upon the Earth at this point. Since then, Ganga the river from Heaven, flows out of Lord Shiva’s locks incessantly at this point called Gomukh. The sacred, naturally formed Shiv Ling rock immersed in the Ganges can be sighted only at the start of winter, when the level of the Ganges waters drops pretty low. This is the spot where Lord Shiva had stood and retained Mother Ganga in His matted locks, upon His head.
