Char Dham Yatra – Pilgrimage to the Himalayas

Day 22 – Towards Kedarnath

Let us commence our onward journey after having had Darshan of Budha Kedar, Everyone’s heart is exulting with joy. The Darshan of so many temples and the beauty of Nature all around has made this pilgrimage of ours a very fascinating and mesmerizing one. No matter which place you travel to, everything turns out well if the company is good. Everyone is happy with the Darshan they have had and every step is carrying with itself something new to look forward to. Our Nation Bharat is the mother of spirituality, where God resides in every particle or grain, and even the rivers are addressed and revered as Mother. Our lives have been Blessed, having been born in such a beautiful and sacred land. The journey continues and after Budha Kedar, we have now arrived at Devprayag. Come, let us learn about the history of Devprayag.

Devprayag

We have reached Devprayag after a three hours long journey from Budhakedar. The sublimity of Devprayag is evident from it’s very name. This is place is very sacred and venerable. It is very beautiful too.

Devprayag is one of the five ‘Prayags’ of Uttarakhand. It is a large town and a very famous pilgrimage center too. It is the confluence point of the rivers Ganga and Alaknanda. Ganga emerging from Gangotri as the Bhagirathi, acquires its name Ganga only at this point, after it meets & merges with the Alaknanda. When King Bhagiratha propitiated Mother Ganga to descend upon the Earth, 33 crores (330 million) Demi – Gods & Demi – Godesses too descended upon earth alongwith her. They chose this place as their abode or place of stay and thus, this place became Devprayag, also considered the birthplace of Ganga. Being situated at the point of confluence of the Bhagirathi & Alaknanda, Devprayag too like Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), is considered to be of very great spiritual and religious significance. The Alaknanda river flowing into Dev Prayag in Uttarakhand, originates from two glaciers – Shatpanth and Bhagirath Khadak. The sight of that point where the Alaknanda flowing in from one direction and the Bhagirathi flowing in from the other, meet, is extraordinarily stunning and wonderful! Deprayag is also known as ‘Sudarshan Kshetra’ meaning a place that is very good looking or beautiful to behold. One cannot sight a single crow in this place, which in itself is a surprising fact.

The sage and ascetic Dev Sharma had engaged in very austere penance of Lord Vishnu, at this place. Lord Vishnu being pleased by his penance granted him a boon stating that the fame of this place would spread to all the three worlds and it would be known by his (Dev) name until the very end of time. Since then, this place was given the title of ‘Devprayag’.

Devprayag is an exceptional pilgrimage center having a very special association with Lord Rama too. When Lord Rama returned from Lanka after his victory over Ravana, the sages and seers gave Him a suggestion/advice to perform penance at the confluence of Bhagirathi & Alaknanda in Devprayag, in order to redeem Himself from the sin of having killed a Brahmana, that is, Ravana. Lord Rama therefore performed penance for a very long period seated on a rock, at a meditation point close to the confluence of the rivers. To this day, the local priests will point you out to that particular rock. Even today, a portion of that huge rock bears an imprint, in the form of a slightly smooth surface, wizened or worn off because of someone having sat cross-legged on it for a prolonged period of time. Even today one can have the Darshan of that rock, over there.
