The mind is always on the move/working, it is not that easy to steady /calm it, even with meditation. I ask you to do meditation, the minute you close your eyes, you become even more disturbed – whatever is really positive or negative, these enter your thoughts and you become even more confused, and it becomes more worse.
Then what do we do, we do meditation, so you close your eyes and your mind goes for a wander, a spin and then we stop the meditation saying I really don’t have the time for this. I can’t do this anymore. This is not how it should be, do not fight with your mind. When you close your eyes, if thoughts come, let them in.
I will teach you a simple method – don’t do anything, just go and sit down on a chair. Now that you are seated comfortably, remember that to make/create anything, takes time for example you want to build a house, this takes some time. So if you want to change or transform anything, to control it, it will take some time. I will take this special vibhuthi, consume it and expect change – it will not happen. To bring about change, you need to give it some time. Try to understand how the change will unfold.
Now for the kriya – sit on a chair, just sit on the chair, look at the same thing, keep looking at it, whatever thought comes to your mind, let it come. Let the thoughts come, challenge the thoughts to come. Whatever it is that you like, keep looking at it, looking at it, looking at it – today for 10 minutes, tomorrow for 15 min, 20 min sit down, 1 hour sit down.. Your body, your chetana, your Atma, your unconscious mind that keeps moving, the mind that sometimes takes you to the very depths and sometimes lifts you up to the very heights, keep observing this thing. Your body then becomes ready and you automatically enter that chetana(consciousness), that world, that realm which is completely different.
You know, Paramahansa Yogananda, who revealed the knowledge of Kriya yoga, his Guru took him beyond maya. His Guru was a very great master, not someone small. How did Yogananda’s transformation happen? How did his Guru change him?
What is beyond maya? There is nothing! People keep talking about moksh, moksh, moksh.. How will moksh come when one has attachment over every thing, give me this too, give me that too, I want this, I want to achieve that – until these are there, one will not get Moksh, never. Do not ever say I want Moksh. Moksh is like a stone, it is nothing. Have you seen a stone – it represents Moksh. After this, there is no Karma or activity, there is nothing!
So, everyday, find a place to sit and observe a thing or object. Keep doing this. After 10 days, 15 days, 20 days, you will begin to notice a change in yourself. You are now wandering, your thoughts are wandering to 100 different places. If I tell you Bhaijnath, your mind does not not wander to this place, does it? Why not? Because you have not see this place, because you do not know about this. But if I were to talk to you about your home, your temple, you have reached there, you see it all. Why? Because your unconscious mind is sitting there. How much you wander, you think, you hear, you talk – it is all in this mind.
Whenever you do this Kriya, when you sit down and keep sitting down, what happens? Those doors(of your mind) that you have kept open, what happens? Don’t do anything, pretend to be dead, keep observing, don’t think anything, if any thought comes, let it be, if a song is heard, let it be, just don’t do anything. Do this, to steady your mind, do this kriya , in 15-20 days you will notice, your eyes will close by themselves. Your mind will become stable. You will stop thinking, thoughts will cease. Then your real work will begin, the work to move towards chetana(consciousness), anand(bliss).
You will not be able to imagine. You were here, sitting here, were seeing everything, yet how can you be so blissful? Why? Because your Atma experiences that bliss, that not everybody can experience. This is the breaking of maya. Why are you so blissful, laughing in the midst of so much misery? It makes no difference to you.(untouched by the world)
These are all exercises of the body, of the mind that bring steadiness in you, after maya is broken. Our body is made of the 5 elements – earth, air, fire, water and ether.. Go in, go in, go deep inside, what is inside? Inside is the same as outside. If you are made of the 5 elements, the outer world is also made of these 5 elements. This is both inside and outside. There is no difference. Yet, we remain in maya and think – I am this, I am doing this, I am eating, I am drinking, I am doing everything. After maya is broken, there is no ‘I’ at all, I am doing nothing, whatever is, is being done by Him. There is nothing in my hands. This transformation will happen that you will forget yourself.
Take the case of Ramakarishna Paramahamsa, who went so far in meditation, that he lost all body consciousness/feeling. When he was in deep meditation, when hit with a stick, he had no pain because he forgot ‘I am something’, I am not this body but am Atma. He also did Kriyas, did exercises for the body and mind, he reached a point where he realized – to whom you pray fervently, in whom you believe from your heart, whom you have accepted, daily to whom you do poojas and keep doing , one day you will become the same as that, have the same structure(roop) and finally there is no difference between you and that.
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was an Avatar, an Ansh-Avatar. He was a great devotee of Kali Maa, and performing pooja to Kali Maa everyday, he became Kali himself. Kali Maa’s persona came into him. He had blood flowing out of his mouth. His sadhana or practices were in a different league, not easy for the common man.
But this Kriya, that I am teaching you, is a simple process to control the mind. If it is difficult to do with eyes closed, do it with eyes open. Do this and observe the changes in you. Leave the feeling that you had no special experience after the Kriya today, or I have done for a week, no experience yet – leave these thoughts. These things take time, you are trying to steady the body-mind, which is many many days old, many many years old. Keep the faith, faith in yourself. Faith in oneself is very important.
The Guru or person in front of you, will do something, if he prays, God will listen to him – sacrifice these thoughts. You have been created and I have been created by the same God. We are all one. There is no difference between us. When a person understands this ‘oneness’, like I have taken the effort to understand this, he will understand that there is no difference between us. I can’t say I understand everything, I am God, It is not like that.
Try to understand yourself first. Just because someone says – You are God, we cannot say I am God. That becomes arrogance/ego. When you realize you are God, you will never say I am God, instead you will say – I am nothing, I have nothing. Yet the experiences, things you get from this self-realized person, you will not get anywhere else., even though he says I have nothing, who am I to give you anything?
So, do this Kriya to steady your mind, this is something you can do to steady your mind. When we chant mantras, they offer protection, protection from our negative mind, no bad forces can come near us or bad sights can affect us. That is why we chant mantras. But mantra chanting is not necessary to steady the mind, do this kriya, this is the simple solution to steady the mind, not difficult to understand.
